Positives:
(*This approach takes a lot of work up front, but is completely worth it.)
Negatives
- kids are pushing themselves to learn more
- students that have leveled up are wanting to help those that are on a concept they have completed
- students have told me that they love the new way of learning because they feel that other kids behavior is NOT getting in the way of their learning
- students have created multiple products with creativity and enthusiasm
- "class is already over?" student quote
- students grades have improved
- students that complete the activities have better test scores
- students are working 95-100% of the time instead of 50%
- gives them a sense of accomplishment
- pacing is more appropriate to each student
- activities can be geared toward learning style through use of choice
- I have time to work with kids one-on-one whether they need extra help or enrichment
- Constant formative assessment is built in by the Gauntlet checks
- I am able to give feedback on their assignments instantly because they finish at different times; this gives them the opportunity to make adjustments or take the grade.
- I go home in a great mood and feel like I am actually facilitating learning
(*This approach takes a lot of work up front, but is completely worth it.)
Negatives
- student pacing is not always in line with the sequencing in the curriculum
- a few students are still not driven (although this number is significantly lower than before)
- "this is just too much work" student quote...students that liked to fly below the radar do NOT like this approach because it holds them individually accountable and requires them to process their own learning
- student pacing does not always line up with grading periods
